ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY
The ACWMA adopted a 2-mile section of FM 1441 through the Texas Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway program. Volunteers pick up litter along this stretch at least four times each year. One of these pickups occurs during the State annual Trash‐Off event each April. Participants in the program are required to sign a liability release.
Litter is hazardous to wildlife and other animals in a variety of ways. Animals can get their heads stuck in jars, cups or other kinds of containers that smell of food, causing them to suffocate or starve to death. They can also cut themselves on cans and broken glass – injuries that could be fatal or lead to infection. Their heads or other body parts can get stuck in plastic six-pack rings, making it difficult for them to move or fly. Plastic or latex can be mistaken for food, which can make them sick or block their digestive tract. Wildlife can also get tangled in string, ropes, or netting, rendering them unable to free themselves. And, household waste and cleaners could be toxic, causing extreme illness or death (Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation).

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS
In 2015 the ACWMA developed its Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) program. NHN members volunteer to work on other NHN member properties in exchange for those members to contribute future labor on their property. Workdays, which are held monthly for nine months of the year, start at 9 a.m. and end at noon. Participants in the program are required to sign a liability release.
Over the years the NHN volunteers have planted seedlings, removed invasive plant species, and installed erosion control devices. Yaupon removal is a primary activity, and to assist in that removal, the ACWMA has partnered with Lost Pines Yaupon Tea – We want the yaupon gone and they want to make delicious use of it!
